Our history

Film Cutters began in Germiston in 2008 with a simple aim: make film handling safer, quicker and more consistent on busy packing lines. Since then, the business has grown from a small local operation into a South African supplier trusted by operations in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and beyond.

Our history

2008: Starting with a practical need on the packing floor

Film Cutters was founded in 2008 by Thabo Maseko in Germiston, Ekurhuleni, after years of seeing how much time packing teams lost on awkward film handling. At the time, many sites were still using improvised methods for shrink film and stretch film, which slowed production and created uneven wrap quality. The first focus was straightforward: supply cutters and dispensers that could stand up to daily use and make each roll easier to control.

From the start, the business was built around South African packing conditions. That meant working with dust, long shifts, load-shedding interruptions, and sites where operators needed equipment that was quick to understand. The early years were spent learning what different lines needed in real factories, not in theory.

  • Founded in Germiston in 2008
  • Initial focus on shrink film and stretch film cutters
  • Built around packing line efficiency and operator safety
  • Early support for local factories in Gauteng

2009 to 2012: Earning trust one site at a time

During the first few years, Film Cutters grew through hands-on work. Thabo and the small team spent time on site with clients, checking how cutters were being used and where delays were happening. That period shaped the business more than any brochure ever could. It showed that a good product still needs proper setup, clear operator guidance and practical after-sales support.

By 2010 and 2011, the business had started supplying more packing lines across Johannesburg and Pretoria, with enquiries also coming from industrial areas in Boksburg and Midrand. The team learned that no two sites are identical. Some needed compact dispensers for tight spaces. Others needed units that could handle heavier duty roll changes and faster pack rates.

In 2012, Film Cutters had established a reputation for being easy to deal with and reliable on the follow through. That matters in industry, where a delayed spare part or a loose blade can stop a line and cost money. The business kept its offering simple, with a focus on supply, repair, and response when things needed attention.

2013 to 2016: Building service around the equipment

As the client base grew, Film Cutters added more structured service support. This was the period when preventive servicing and safety checks became a bigger part of the work. Sites needed more than a once-off sale. They needed someone who understood wear patterns, blade life, dispenser alignment and the pressures of daily production.

Technical support also became more important as customers asked for line setup help and roll change support. In many plants, one small adjustment could save time across every shift. The team began offering site assessments so that new equipment could be matched properly to the line and the product being packed.

By this stage, the business was also dealing with a wider mix of industries. Food packing, warehousing, general manufacturing and distribution all had their own pace and safety requirements. The aim was always to reduce wasted motion and keep film application neat, controlled and repeatable.

  • Preventive servicing added to reduce downtime
  • Site assessments introduced for better equipment matching
  • Training support expanded for operators and supervisors
  • Breakdown callouts became part of the standard service offering

2017 to 2019: Serving more regions without losing the local feel

As orders increased, Film Cutters began serving a broader footprint across South Africa, while keeping its base in Germiston. Clients in Durban and Cape Town needed equipment that could handle humidity and coastal conditions, while inland sites in Polokwane and Gauteng faced different wear and handling demands. The business stayed focused on practical supply, not noise.

These years were important for building consistency. The team improved how spares were supplied, how repairs were handled and how technician visits were scheduled. Johan van Wyk became a key part of technical support, working on dispenser repairs, upgrades and blade replacement needs. Ayanda Dlamini helped keep service calls moving smoothly, which mattered when production teams needed a fast response.

The business also refined its approach to operator training. A good cutter or dispenser only performs properly when the people using it know how to load film, change rolls and spot early signs of wear. That training cut down on avoidable stoppages and helped clients get steadier output across shifts.

2020 to 2022: Keeping packing lines moving through harder operating conditions

When operating conditions tightened, reliability became even more important. Clients needed equipment and support that could keep working under pressure, even with irregular power supply and stretched maintenance teams. Film Cutters responded by keeping a close eye on service stock, turnaround times and practical upgrades that made day to day use easier.

The business kept supplying cutters and dispensers across major centres including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and Polokwane, with support reaching sites in Germiston, Boksburg and Midrand as well. Michelle Naidoo helped maintain order flow and admin consistency, while Pieter Smit handled field work and on-site fixes where equipment needed attention.

During this period, many clients asked for equipment upgrades instead of full replacement, especially where existing lines were still sound but needed better handling, safer blade access or more reliable dispenser action. That approach suited many South African operations because it kept budgets under control and reduced downtime. It was practical, and that is how the business has always worked.

  • Increased focus on spares supply and repair turnaround
  • More requests for equipment upgrades instead of full replacement
  • Stronger support for sites working through load-shedding
  • Broader service reach across several provinces

2023 to today: A steady team with a clear job to do

Today, Film Cutters operates with a clear structure and a hands-on team. Thabo Maseko leads the business as Managing Director, with Naledi Khumalo supporting customers on sales, Johan van Wyk on technical matters, Ayanda Dlamini on service coordination, Michelle Naidoo on operations and Pieter Smit in the field. That mix has helped the business stay responsive while still keeping a practical, no-fuss approach.

What has stayed the same since 2008 is the focus on packing line performance. The business still helps clients with onsite installation, line setup, blade replacement, dispenser repairs, safety checks, roll change support, breakdown callouts and operator training. It also continues to supply spares and advise on the right equipment for each site.

From a small Germiston start to a supplier serving industries across South Africa, the story has been shaped by real site problems and steady improvement. The work is not complicated, but it has to be done properly. That is why customers still come through the enquiry form, ask for guidance, and rely on Film Cutters for equipment that fits the job.
