Installed for the way your line actually runs
Onsite installation is not only about fixing a cutter in place. It is about setting it up so operators can use it safely, quickly and with less waste on every shift. We fit cutters and dispensers to packing benches, conveyor side frames, pallet wrap points and other line-side positions where film is handled most often.
Our team checks the layout first, then positions the unit for reach, feed direction, roll change access and operator safety. That helps avoid awkward handling, uneven cutting and damaged film during busy production periods. In Germiston and other industrial areas, many clients need equipment that can cope with long shifts, dust, vibration and load-shedding related start-stop use, so the mounting method matters.
What is included in an onsite installation
Each installation is planned around the site, the film type and the output target. We can install a single unit at a small packing station or several cutters across a full line. Where needed, we also prepare the workstation for safer film handling and smoother roll replacement.
- Site assessment of the bench, frame or line-side position
- Mounting and fixing of the cutter or dispenser
- Alignment for shrink film or stretch film flow
- Operator height and reach checks
- Blade function test and cut quality check
- Basic safety check around hand access and edge exposure
- Initial operator handover and use guidance
If the site already has a frame or table in place, we check whether it can take the load and whether extra support is needed. For older packing lines, we can advise on practical adjustments before installation starts so the job is done properly the first time.
How the installation process works
We keep the process straightforward. After the enquiry comes in through the contact form, we confirm the site, the film type and the number of units needed. If the installation is part of a bigger line setup, we ask for a few photos and basic measurements first so we arrive with the right fixings and tools.
- Initial enquiry and job scope confirmation
- Review of packing line layout and mounting point
- Schedule the visit and confirm site access
- Onsite fitting, adjustment and testing
- Operator handover and basic care guidance
- Follow up if a further adjustment is needed
Most standard installations are completed in a single site visit, although larger lines or sites with custom frames may need more time. If your operation runs across multiple shifts, we can plan the visit around quieter production windows to limit disruption.
Typical cutter and dispenser specifications
Our installation work covers a practical range of cutter and dispenser setups used in South African packing rooms, warehouses and production areas. We match the unit to the roll size, film tension and daily output so it performs as expected under normal site conditions.
- Film widths commonly supported: 300 mm to 1 500 mm
- Mounting types: bench top, frame mounted and line-side fixed
- Materials: powder-coated steel, galvanised steel and selected stainless components
- Blade options: manual cut, guided cut or fitted blade assembly
- Roll handling: light duty to medium and high frequency use
- Working environments: dry warehouses, dusty plants and coastal humidity conditions
Where the site has more demanding conditions, such as moisture near Durban or fine dust in industrial Gauteng, we suggest the most suitable hardware finish and placement so the unit lasts longer and keeps operating neatly.
Turnaround, pricing and scheduling
Turnaround depends on location, number of units and whether any extra mounting work is required. For major centres such as Germiston, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Midrand, site visits can often be arranged quickly. More remote sites like Polokwane, or larger operations in Cape Town and Durban, may need a longer lead time for routing and planning.
Our pricing is based on the scope of work, travel, fitting time and any added parts or supports required. We quote clearly before the visit so you know what is included. If the job needs repeat visits for a phased line rollout, we can price it in stages rather than bundling everything into one figure.
Because every packing line is different, we avoid blanket pricing. A simple bench mount will not cost the same as a full multi-point line setup with adjustment work and operator training.
Keeping the installation in good working order
Once the cutter or dispenser is installed, the best results come from regular checks. Film dust, worn blades and loose fixings can affect cut quality and slow the line down. We usually recommend maintenance at planned intervals based on usage, not only when a fault appears.
- Weekly visual checks by the line operator
- Monthly inspection of blade condition and fixings
- Quarterly service for higher use lines
- Immediate check after a strike, jam or hard roll change
- Replacement of worn parts before they damage the film path
For plants that run long hours or operate through load-shedding changeovers, preventative servicing is worth it. It keeps the unit aligned, reduces breakdown callouts and helps protect output when the shift is already under pressure.
Film Cutters is based in Germiston, Ekurhuleni and supports clients in Boksburg, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and Polokwane. Thabo Maseko and the team handle installation, technical setup and follow-up support with the same practical approach on every site.
